| Fixed Limit Holdem Tips |
| Fixed limit holdem is a game of patience
and discipline. Please read below fixed limit tips and strategy
to get you started... |
 |
| 1 - Play the correct cards for your table
position... |
| The strength of your starting hand is determined
by your position in holdem poker. If you have AQ under the
gun (first to act), it is a marginally playable hand. The same
AQ on the button (last to act) is now a raising hand. The advantage
of being the last player to act in holdem is the biggest technical
factor in playing the game. |
| 2 - Keep detailed notes
on the betting patterns of your opposition... |
| Betting patterns in fixed limit can give
away a lot of information. Does your opponent check raise on
the flop, on the turn, not at all etc. Knowing how your opponent
bets even down to how long he takes to make a bet is a big
advantage and can decide your course of action in a marginal
situation. |
| 3 - Do the math... |
| Fixed limit is all about mathematics. It
is vital to know your "pot odds". Pot odds are the
amount it will cost you to call in relation to the amount in
the pot that you can win. If there is $100 in the pot and it
is $10 to call you are getting 10-1 on your money. Therefore
you can play to hit a card that is a 9-1 shot and long term
you will make a profit. The maths of fixed limit are a huge
factor and will take time to learn/ after a while it will become
second nature to you. |
| 4 - Be deceptive.. |
| It is too easy to see fixed limit holdem
as a mechanical game. There is more to it than meets the eye.
If you only bet when you have a hand, everyone will know that
when you check you have nothing and so on. Mix it up. Check
raise sometimes against looser players. Sometimes come out
and bet your big hands, but never let anyone get a read on
how you bet. Keep them guessing. |
| 5 - Be very selective preflop... |
| In number 1 we said that the cards you should
play are related to your position on the table. This is true
but there still are only under 20% of hands that are profitable
to play anywhere. On the web you always have the facility to
see your stats, use this facility. If you see that you are
starting to play too many hands preflop, address this and change
it. Patience is essential. |
