| In all forms of poker, it is important to
be selective with your starting hands. This is very much
the case with hi-low. Only 15% of hi-low hands are profitable
so if you are playing more than 2 out of every 10 hands
you may struggle. Keep to hands that contain A2 or A3.
The only exceptions to this are certain double suited hands
but there are only around 50 hands that do not contain
an ace in them that are worth playing. |

We see too many players, used to playing
holdem, who try to check raise and trap in hi-low. Hi-low
is a lot more straight forward. If you flop the nuts
it is normally the best idea to come out and bet the
pot or thereabouts. There are exceptions to this but
if you use it as a rule you wont go far wrong. Many players
chase low draws, flushes, straights and so on. If you
don't bet you let them chase for free. The main profit
from hi low you will make, is from people chasing low
cards. So BET THE POT EACH ROUND. |

| Omaha hi low is about having strong draws
to both the low and high hands. If you do not have a high
hand with your low, you will consistently lose to better
players. Also, with a high hand, a low backup hand is very
important. Often you can hold the nuts high or low and
end up losing money in the pot. MAKE BOTH HIGH AND LOW
HANDS. |

| There are times when you are holding the
nut low and nothing else and you may be on the button (last
to act), everyone has checked and you think you are the
only one with the nut low, now bet the pot and try to get
the people to fold their high hands. This is a bit risky
but if you have a read on your players it is a good move
to make. |

| This is not holdem, trips are a liability
in hi low. Say the flop comes Kc 2c 4d, you have Kd Ks
Qc Qs in your hand and now you are getting a bit excited!
WELL DON'T. Because likely hands of other good players
are Ac 3c 5d 6d which is a complete wrapped low draw and
nut flush draw. Basically for your kings to hold up you
need to get lucky. The second hand is a big favourite.
The only way your hand gets in good shape is by pairing
the board. Play trips very slowly and play your big draws
strongly as the strong draws are favourites in this game. |

| If you have trips and you've bet and 2 high
cards have come at the end, it is often worth checking
a big hand. This is because the caller probably was playing
for a low hand or draw. Checking a big hand to him at the
end encourages him to bluff, and wins you an extra bet. |

| Good positions are where you are "round
the back" or on the button. Whilst hi-low is not as
much of a position game as holdem, it is still important. |

| Only for skilled players to try but there
are time when you can play hands that are not in the text
books. If you have 9 10 J Q in your hand you should not
normally play. However, if a few players have called a
raise or there are 4 or more players in the pot you can
play this hand and hands like it. This is because in tighter
games you can assume that the players in the pot have low
cards and therefore you have a lot of live cards in the
deck. Only play this tactic if you are a skilled hi low
player and are able to thro away your hand in the wrong
flops. |
