| Finding the right game for your style is
a huge bonus in Omaha hi low. Being able to change your style
to suit a game is also a big advantage. |
 |
| Each game of hi low can be divided into
3 categories. |
| 1 - Tight Game |
| In this game, the players are reasonably
good players. They are not going to give any money away, at
the same time; they are not going to scare you to death either.
You are probably wise to leave this game, whatever your style
as there are better games somewhere else. If however you must
stay, be prepared to alter your game to suit the flow of this
game. |
| a) Steal more pots when in position. |
| b) If a few players have entered the pot
before you, consider playing middle/high cards when in good
position. |
| c) Be prepared to play very tight if someone
is betting into you and loser if there is no betting before
you. |
| 2 - Medium/Average Game |
| In this game, there is a typical mix of
players. Generally in a 10 handed game there are 2-3 players
with advanced skills,4-5 average/decent players and 1-3 poor/loose
players. It is particularly important to be able to pick out
and categorise the players at your table, and to do this you
yourself have to be a good player. |
| a) The advanced players. Play these players
only with extremely good hands. When in a pot with them, tread
very carefully. If you are going to bluff anyone, often you
can bluff these players, but pick your moments well. Always
respect the fact that they will be in the pot with cards with
great potential to harm your bankroll. |
| b) The decent players. Again, make sure
you have a good hand with these players but you CAN lower your
requirements a little with them. Bluff them according to their
playing style, never bluff the looser ones of this playing
type. |
| c) The weaker players. With these players,
do not be scared to bet a lot when you have a good hand. The
chances are that they cannot fold a hand very easily. Be very
wary of bluffing them also as again, they will not need as
good a hand to call with as a better player will. Play them
in a very straight forward manner and you won’t go far
wrong. |
| If you yourself are honest with yourself
and you fall into the decent player mid category then look
at it like this. |
| a) If you play too many
pots with the advanced players, you will end up losing. |
| b) If you play with the other decent players
you won’t win or lose much overall. |
| c) If you play most of your hands with
the weaker players, you will win money overall. |
| Play with the weak, that is what they are
there for!! BUT, do not ever lower your standards too much
to play with weaker players or you will lose your advantage. |
| The last game type is the maniac game |
| 3 - The loony bin |
| In this game, the average pot will be much
bigger than normal, there will be a lot of raising and re-raising
pre flop, there will be a lot of bluffing at pots. |
| Many things can cause a maniacal game. |
| There are a load of loose players on
the table. |
| There is one or more player on the table
on tilt and everyone is trying to get his money. |
| There is a lot of money on the table
and some people are losing big money. |
| One or more players is having a rush
of cards and is raising a lot of pots pre flop. |
| In a game like this, you must resist the
urge to get sucked in to the game tempo and maintain your starting
hand and flop requirements. You must also have the bankroll
to play this game and must be mentally prepared to lose money
in it. It is no good thinking “wow! I am in a great game
and am going to clean up!”, poker does not work like
this. Instead concentrate more on the things that make you
a good player, patience, odds calculation, hand reading etc. |
| With all that said, the maniacal game is
where you should want to be as this is where on your day you
CAN clean up. If your luck is out for that day, get out of
this game fast though! |
