There is such a wide choice of tournaments
online now due to the huge boom in poker that there really
is something for everyone! Tournaments range from FREEROLLS
which are free to enter, all the way up to $10,000 buy ins.
Nowadays, at the weekend many new people are becoming dollar
millionaires online. Please read below some different online
tournament types.
Freerolls
Freerolls are free tournaments that online
poker sites run to reward players who play regularly. Most
freeroll tournaments require you to have played a certain amount
of raked hands to be eligible, some are simply free to everyone.
The top prize varies but is always worth having. Indeed, paradisepoker.com
have held the worlds first million dollar freeroll recently!
These tournaments are great but be aware that as the are free
you will normally have to beat a couple of thousand people
with prizes only going to the top 10/20.
Satellites
Satellites are tournaments that allow you
to win your way into bigger tournaments. The entries to satellites
can be as small as a dollar or as large as $2,500. It depends
on the prize pool as to how many people qualify for the bigger
tournament. For example, a poker player named Eric Dawlby,
last year entered a $1 satellite, he won that and got into
a $200 satellite. He then qualified from this satellite to
get onto the Ladbrokes main event cruise tournament. Lo and
behold he won the whole cruise tournament, winning $250,000
for a stake of a dollar! It is this sort of return that makes
satellites great for those who want to play the bigger events
but do not have the money.
Online Rebuy Tournaments
These are tournaments where for the first
half of the tournament, if you lose all your chips, you can
rebuy for the entry fee and get the same amount of chips again.
These provide good loose action as people play aggressively,
knowing that they will not be eliminated and they can rebuy.
Once the rebuy period is over, the tournament proper begins.
An example of the value you can get from a rebuy tournament
is the pokerstars $11 rebuy tournament where the winner often
can expect $9,000. not bad for an eleven dollar entry fee!
Online Freezout Tournaments
In Freezout tournaments, you buy in for
a certain amount and then once your chips are gone, you are
out. Whilst these tournaments do not offer the value of a rebuy
tournament, they make everybody start on an even playing field
as people cannot buy their way to big stacks in the first half.
Sit And Go tournaments
Sit and go tournaments run when there are
enough players to make up the tournaments instead of starting
at a set time. Sit and go's can be heads up, single table or
multi table tournaments. The most popular are single table
tournaments where 9 or 10 players sit down and play, the top
3 normally take the prizes. There are also sit and go satellites
where the winner goes on to a bigger multi payer tournament.
The poker room takes a percentage of the buy in as its cut
and the rest is played out between the players who have registered.
All in all, there are tournaments to suit
every style and budget, all you need to do is to find out where
the tournament you want to play is and what time it starts.
