Omaha Poker Rules

Omaha Hi is a great game for action and originates from Texas holdem. It was designed for people who want more action due to starting with 4 cards instead of 2. On this page we will show you the omaha poker rules for fixed and pot limit omaha.
Poker Million 468x60 - Pedigree
Omaha poker differs from texas holdem in the following ways.

•  In Omaha Hi, you start with 4 cards

•  You MUST use two of these cards to make your final 5 card hand together with 3 cards from the communal cards in the middle known as the flop

•  Most games of Omaha Hi are pot limit games and therefore you can only bet the amount that is in the pot at any given time

Lets see how the betting works in a typical game.

The blind structure
Two players start by “posting the blinds”
Blinds are the money that 2 players each hand must put in before he/she has seen their cards. This means there will always be money in the pot before any cards are dealt. The two blinds are known as the SMALL BLIND and the BIG BLIND. The small blind puts in half that of the big blind.
For example, in a game of $2-$4 pot limit Omaha hi, the small blind will put in $2 and the big blind will put in $4. The blinds move from player to player in a circle so that each person will take it in turns to play for free and to put in the compulsory blind. In a 10 player game, each player will be in the small blind once and the big blind once, costing a total of $6 per round ($6 every 10 hands).

•  The cards are then dealt; each player is dealt 4 cards face down which they can look at immediately. These are known as “hole cards”.

•  Now it is the turn of the player seated to the left of the big blind to make his bet. He can either call the big blind (in $2-$4 it will be $4) or he can bet whatever is in the pot or lastly he can simply fold.

•  The betting then moves onto the next player and he has the same options, though the amount in the pot will be changing all the time. The betting moves clockwise round to each player and finishing with the big blind acting last.

•  Each time someone raises the pot, all the other players still in the pot will have to act again and will have the same options, raise, call or fold.

•  Once the first round of betting stops, those players still in the pot go on to see the flop. The flop is the communal cards dealt in the middle.

•  The dealer deals the first part of the flop by dealing 3 cards, face-up on the middle of the table.

•  It is now up to each player to calculate their best 5 card hand using 2 of their hole cards and 3 of the communal flop cards.

•  Another round of betting starts, this time beginning with the small blind and going around the table clockwise.

•  The maximum that can be bet at any time is the money in the pot in pot limit omaha , the minimum bet is the price of the initial big blind. In fixed limit omaha you are limited to betting a certain amount each round.

•  When this round of betting stops, the dealer deals the 4 th communal flop card, known as “the turn”.

•  Now another round of betting starts.

•  When this round stops, the 5 th and final flop card is dealt face up on the table, this card is known as “the river”.

•  Now begins the final round of betting.

•  After this final round of betting, if there is more than one person left in the pot, they show their cards to the table and the best 5 card hand wins the pot. This is known as “the showdown”. If two players both hold the same winning hand, the pot is split equally between them.

Though this may seem complicated initially, it is in fact very simple. We suggest that you sign up for a play money account and play for pretend money to get a feel for the betting involved in Omaha hi. You can do this at the sites above.
