When you discard a card you throw it away and the dealer will give you a replacement card. Once you have discarded your cards and got the replacements you will now have to make the best possible 5 card poker hand using your 5 cards and bet accordingly.
Draw poker, as with all forms of poker, is a primarily mathematical game. You must know the odds of making certain poker hands and discard accordingly. If you get too ambitious with the hands you are trying to make, you will not complete them enough. If you are not ambitious enough and don't try to make good enough hands, your opponents will beat you with better cards. This is where the skill llies.
