Poker robots are computer programs which are programmed to sit at tables online and play set raise limit holdem for profit. They can be customised by the user to play tight, aggressive etc etc and are mainly used on party poker. Can these robots win? YES they can win, i have seen them in action and they can win on the lower limits i.e up to 3/6.
The advantage of these robots is that they play flawless odds as they can calculate the correct odds to call or fold in an instant. Fixed raise holdem is all about calculating odds. The disadvantage is that they do not have the human factor of reading bluffs and reading the individual players. Precisely why they will not do as well at higher levels where the play is more varied and skillfull. However, boffins expect that in ten years time or less Robots will be equipped to win heads up matches against very skilled opponents using artificial intelligence. Every year there is a large competition where programmers pit their robots against one another.
Sites have measures in place to prevent these robots but there is still no effective way to stop them completely. Look for tell-tale signs like never chatting, acting the at the same speeds between hands and playing to a very set pattern.
